IV Sedation Bolton – Sedation Dentistry – Humber Valley Dental

Dental sedation can be used for a number of reasons, including:

  • Reducing patient anxiety
  • Minimizing discomfort and pain
  • Allowing for a more comfortable dental experience

At Humber Valley Dental, Bolton dentistry, we offer a variety of sedation options to reduce anxiety and discomfort:

Oral conscious sedation

The patient has to ingest an oral sedative, usually in a liquid form, about an hour or so before their appointment. By the time that their procedure begins, the patient will be fully relaxed. Nitrous oxide may also be given to further enhance the sedative effects.

IV Conscious Sedation

This sedation method is given to the patient with an IV. and is mostly used for surgical procedures. This will put the patient in a fully relaxed yet conscious state, allowing them to respond to the dentist during the procedure.

IV conscious sedation puts the patient in a “twilight? state where all pain and discomfort and reduced. Most patients who receive this type of sedation will be able to communicate and respond to verbal cues during their procedure. This allows patients to let the dentist know if they are feeling any discomfort. Some mild amnesia may be experienced as patients drift in and out of consciousness. Because the sedatives take some time to leave the body, you will need someone to drive you home following your procedure. Be sure to get plenty of rest and refrain from any strenuous activities for the rest of the day.

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide is commonly known as laughing gas and puts the patient in an elated and relaxed state. The gas is inhaled through a gas mask that the patient wears over their mouth.

Depending on your oral and medical history and oral procedure, our dentists  will collaborate with you to decide which sedation method is best for your situation.
